Our brief was to create a newspaper zine under the theme ‘The Personal is Political’. For our zine, we came up with the topic of dance as resistance.
Throughout history, dance has been used as a tool of self-expression, rebellion and cultural expression, connecting communities. At the same time, it is also incredibly personal, we dance alone in our rooms, we dance with our loved ones, we dance to forget and we dance for joy. We wanted to capture this essence and create a zine that inspires hope, freedom and self-expression.
The zine follows a narrative structure. It opens with our manifesto and leads to the personal aspect of dance, slowly making its way to dance as a form of resistance among different communities (Daytimers, Beirut, Ballroom dancing, etc). It is interspersed with quotes from our friends and families about dance.
Our main spread is about Dabke, a dance from the Levant region, a symbol of Palestinian resistance.
From there we move back to the personal, and end with an interview and a fun little playlist!
